Biography
Dr. Mohan “Mo” Nadkarni holds the positions of Harry T. Peters Jr. Professor of Medicine and David A. Harrison Distinguished Educator at the UVA School of Medicine. Since 2014, Dr. Nadkarni has served as Chief of General Internal Medicine General Medicine, Geriatrics, and Palliative Care. Throughout his career, Dr. Nadkarni’s interests have focused on the care of vulnerable populations and advancing knowledge of social drivers of health.
Commitment to Health Protection
Dr. Nadkarni started his career at Central Virginia Community Health Center, caring for an impoverished rural population. In 1992, Dr. Nadkarni co-founded the Charlottesville Free Clinic, a beacon of hope providing comprehensive medical and dental services to uninsured community residents. In 2000, he assumed the role of Medical Director of University Medical Associates, overseeing care for 13,000 patients with complex medical and psychosocial needs.
A visionary educator, Dr. Nadkarni founded and currently directs UVA School of Medicine’s Social Issues in Medicine community service-learning based course, which is a requirement for all UVA medical students. This course has facilitated over 81,000 hours of community service at local agencies and schools.
During the COVID-19 pandemic, he served as Medical Director for the UVA Health | Population Health Community COVID Testing & Vaccination Program. Dr. Nadkarni’s transformative leadership and compassionate care reveal his aim for community empowerment through education, service, and innovative healthcare solutions.
