Specimen Collection:

Collection and Handling Instructions for UVA Only SPECIMEN REQUIREMENTS: Preferred sample: 3 or 5 mL lavender top (EDTA) tube (prefer at least 1 mL) Alternate sample: 6 mL pink top (EDTA) tube, 300 uL lavender top (EDTA) microtainer PLT Clumping Protocol: Collect 3 to 5 mL lavender top EDTA tube (prefer at least 1 mL) AND 3 mL light blue tube (3.2% sodium citrate)

Shipping and Handling Instructions:

Collection and Handling Instructions for UVA Only SPECIMEN PROCESSING:
Minimum Volume: Open and closed tube mode uses 88 ul minimum per aspiration. Slidemaker Stainer requires 60 ul of minimum 300 ul dead tube volume. By Hematology personnel: Plt Clumping Protocol Light blue top tube specimens can only be used for platelet counts. Platelet counts from an extra light blue top tube can be used if physician suspects EDTA sensitivity is causing platelet clumping in the lavender top tubes. The dilutional effect of the liquid citrate anticoagulant will be factored into the reported light blue top tube platelet count by multiplying the platelet count by 1.1 and reporting the count with a comment, "Alternate citrate tube used for platelet count."

SPECIMEN STABILITY:
Stable for 24 hours at room temperature 18-26 C and 48 hours refrigerated at 2-8 C. Specimens unacceptable if frozen.

TEST METHODOLOGY:
SYSMEX XN9100 or XN3000 or XN550 analyzer utilizing optical and impedance counting with scatter/fluorescence flow cytometry technology and absorption spectrophotometry.

TESTING SCHEDULE:
Performed as requested: 24 hours per day

SPECIAL INSTRUCTIONS:
Capped CBCs should be transported to the lab at room temperature. If they are sent on ice or if refrigerated they should be tested once the have come to room temperature.

ADD-ON LIMITATIONS:
Prefer within 8 hours. Samples are saved for 24 hours and the lab will perform the test from 8-24 hours post draw and enter the comment "old blood" with the results.
Performing Locations:
