The Special Tissue Laboratory offers services in Neuropathology which include tissue processing/embedding/sectioning/staining of muscle, peripheral nerve, brain tissue, and pituitary. Special neurohistochemistry stains, and enzyme histochemistry stains are available. In addition, this laboratory performs tissue immunohistochemistry, electron microscopy, fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH) and autopsy tissue processing/sectioning/staining.

This laboratory is responsible for receiving all fresh tissues for histologic analysis including immediate frozen section analysis, gross dissection and processing for histologic diagnosis, as well as preparation of aliquots for frozen archives, tissue banking, flow cytometry or other special studies. . Specimens must be submitted to this laboratory in a formalin filled container labeled with the patient's name, history number, and type of tissue. Larger specimens, i.e. partial or whole organs, may be submitted with appropriate labeling, fresh in appropriately sized plastic containers. Formalin may be obtained from the Hospital Storeroom, extension 924-9467, or from Surgical Pathology East Laboratory. Specimens must be accompanied by a Surgical Pathology request form. The form must contain all pertinent data including:
- ICD-10 diagnosis code
- Patient's name, history number, date of birth
- Name of attending physician requesting test (not a resident or fellow)
- Clinic, ward, or service generating the specimen
- Type or source of specimen, date of collection
- All pertinent clinical history or other data relating to the requested evaluation

This laboratory performs all Immunohistochemistry for surgical, cytology, and autopsy tissue specimens.
