The Clinical Microbiology and Molecular Infectious Disease Laboratories provide a full menu of testing in the areas of Bacteriology, Mycobacteriology, Mycology, Virology, Antimicrobial Susceptibility and Molecular Infectious Disease, with limited testing in Parasitology. Historically, microbiologic analyses were slow to provide results, due to the slow growth rate of many organisms. State of the art technologies now provide rapid turn-around of test results from culture and direct from clinical specimens in many cases, for the laboratory diagnosis of a wide range of infectious processes. Co-location with the Specimen Management Support area provides rapid access to clinical samples to further reduce the time clinicians wait for laboratory results for both the inpatient and outpatient services. Appropriate specimen collection, handling, and transport are critical to the success of laboratory testing in the Clinical Microbiology and Molecular Infectious Disease Laboratories, so please contact the laboratory at the numbers above with questions or concerns regarding sample acquisition that are not readily answered in the Laboratory Handbook.
